JOSEF VAVROUŠEK PRIZE 2024 FOR STUDENT FROM DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL LAW, FACULTY OF LAW, CHARLES UNIVERSITY
The award is named after Josef Vavroušek, former Minister of the Government of Czechoslovakia and Chairman of the Federal Committee for the Environment in 1990-1992. In 1991, together with President Václav Havel, he co-organised the first ever conference on the environment in Europe, held at Dobříš Castle, which launched the so-called Environment for Europe Process, which, for example, led to the adoption of the Aarhus Convention in 1998.
The Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University, where Josef Vavroušek worked as a teacher and vice-dean for science and research, has been announcing a student competition since 1996 dedicated to his memory. Over the course of twenty-nine years, a total of 489 competitors from Czech and Slovak universities, including students from law faculties, whose bachelor‘s, master‘s and dissertation theses dealt with environmental protection, environmental policy, sustainable development and climate protection. The first place in the category of diploma theses was in 2024 awarded to Mgr. David CHYTIL for his thesis: Corporate Responsibility and Human Rights: The Way Forward for Climate Litigation? The thesis was defended at Charles University, Faculty of Law, Department of Environmental Law.
